In “Two Concepts of Liberty”, I. Berlin asserts, referring to Mill, that there is no necessary link between freedom as non-interference and freedom as self-government. If, by contrast, we focus our attention on freedom of expression, the assertion of Berlin loses its footing. Freedom of expression is, according to Mill, a public good:either because it serves to control the rulers, or because it allows the collective search for truth. Non-interference in the consciousness of individuals is not an end in itself, (...) but a first step in the formation of collective will. (shrink)

El concepto de fraternidad en la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia entiende la naturaleza humana en términos relacionales. Los deberes fraternos son consustanciales a la naturaleza humana y por tanto el conflicto entre libertad e igualdad queda atenuado. En el contexto de la economía globalizada, la fraternidad, vinculada al principio de gratuidad y a la lógica del don, se propone como vía para lograr una humanización de una economía que amenaza con independizarse del control político. En términos católicos, esta fraternidad (...) se acoge al principio de subsidiariedad. Frente a las concepciones contractualistas de la fraternidad que parten del conflicto, la fraternidad católica mantiene una antropología relacional que naturaliza la motivación para el ejercicio de los deberes fraternos. As part of an ongoing study of causal models in the history of science, a counterfactual scenario in the history of modern astronomy is explored with the aid of computer simulations. After the definition of “linking advance”, a possible world involving technological antecedence is described, branching out in 1510, in which the telescope is invented 70 years before its actual construction, at the time in which Fracastoro actually built the first prototelescope. By using the principle of the closest possible world, (...) we estimate that in this scenario the discovery of the elliptical orbit of Mars would by anticipated by only 28 years. The second part of the paper involves an estimate of the probability of the previous scenario, guided by the principle that the actual world is the mean and using computer simulations to create possible worlds in which the time spans between advances is varied according to a gamma distribution function. Taking into account the importance of the use of the diaphragm for the invention of the telescope, the probability that the telescope were built by 1538 for a branching time at 1510 is found to be smaller than 1%. The work shows that one of the important features of computational simulations in philosophy of science is to serve as a consistency check for the intuitions and speculations of the philosopher. In this note, the problem of tracking random references and rejecting random perturbations in a quadrotor, both generated by an auxiliary system named exosystem, is solved by extending the deterministic tracking problem to the area of stochastic processes. Besides, it is considered that only a part of the state vector of the quadrotor is available through measurements. As a consequence, the state vector of the plant must be estimated in order to close the control loop. On this basis, a controller (...) to track random references and to reject random perturbations is developed by combining a Kalman filter to estimate the references and perturbations of an exosystem and an observer to estimate the states of a quadrotor. Besides, to obtain a more practical controller, the analysis is carried out in discrete time. Numerical simulations are used in a quadrotor to confirm the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control. (shrink)

Since their publication, the Muhammad cartoons featured in Jyllands Posten and Charlie Hebdo have become a symbol of free speech and Western values. These cartoons used provocation as a tool to discuss the limits of free speech and the scope of social self-censorship. In a just society, should the possibility of laughter be distributed equally? Should cartoonists and editors only publish jokes that are universally laughable? What is the proper reaction to these kinds of provocative jokes once the possibility of (...) censorship is ruled out in a liberal context? BackgroundFunctional changes after spinal cord injury are related to changes in cortical plasticity. These changes can be measured with electroencephalography and has potential to be used as a clinical biomarker.MethodIn this longitudinal study participants underwent a total of 30 sessions of robotic-assisted gait training over a course of 6 weeks. The duration of each session was 30 min. Resting state EEG was recorded before and after 30-session rehabilitation therapy. To measure gait, we used the Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury (...) Scale, 10-Meter- Walking Test, Timed-Up-and-Go, and 6-Min-Walking Test. Balance was measured using Berg Balance Scale.ResultsFifteen participants with incomplete SCI who had AIS C or D injuries based on American Spinal Cord Injury Association Impairment Scale classification were included in this study. Mean age was 35.7 years and the mean time since injury was 17.08 months. All participants showed clinical improvement with the rehabilitation program. EEG data revealed that high beta EEG activity in the central area had a negative correlation with gait and balance measured at baseline, in a way that greater high beta EEG power was related to worse clinical function at baseline. Moreover, improvement in gait and balance had negative correlations with the change in alpha/theta ratio in the parietal area.ConclusionIn SCI, functional impairment and subsequent improvement following rehabilitation therapy with RAGT correlated with the change in cortical activity measured by EEG. Our results suggest that EEG alpha/theta ratio may be a potential surrogate marker of functional improvement during rehabilitation. Future studies are necessary to improve and validate these findings as a neurophysiological biomarker for SCI rehabilitation. (shrink)

Los criterios de identidad propuestos por la metafísica tradicional debieron ser sometidos a una profunda revisión cuando entró en escena la mecánica cuántica con sus característicos sistemas indistinguibles. En este trabajo aplicamos el modelo de espacios controversiales de Oscar Nudler para analizar la controversia sobre la identidad en el ámbito de la mecánica cuántica y proponer la introducción en el debate de una ontología cuántica de propiedades sin objetos.

Within a variety of contemplative traditions, non-dual-oriented practices were developed to evoke an experiential shift into a mode of experiencing in which the cognitive structures of self-other and subject–object subside. These practices serve to de-reify the enactment of an observing witness which is usually experienced as separate from the objects of awareness. While several contemplative traditions, such as Zen, Mahāmudrā, Dzogchen, and Advaita Vedanta emphasize the importance of such a non-dual insight for the cultivation of genuine wellbeing, only very few (...) attempts in contemplative science have turned toward the study of non-dual-oriented practices. This article starts from a recently developed theoretical cognitive science framework that models the requirements of a temporary experiential shift into a mode of experiencing free from cognitive subject–object structure. This model inspired by the enactive approach contributes theoretically grounded hypotheses for the much-needed rigorous study of non-dual practices and non-dual experiences. To do so, three steps are taken: first, common elements of non-dual-oriented practices are outlined. Second, the main ideas of enactive cognitive science are presented including a principled theoretical model of what is required for a shift to a pure non-dual experience, that is, an experiential mode that is unbound by subject–object duality. Third, this synthesized theoretical model of the requirements for the recognition of the non-dual is then compared with a specific non-dual style of meditation practice, namely,Mahāmudrāpractice from Tibetan Buddhism. This third step represents a heuristic for evaluating the external coherence of the presented model. With this, the aim is to point toward a principled enactive view of non-dual meditative practice. In drawing the implications of the presented model, this article ends with an outlook toward next steps for further developing a research agenda that may fully address the concrete elements of non-dual practices. L'intérêt que Daniel Pezeril a porté sa vie durant à la pensée non chrétienne est né de ses études de philosophie à la Sorbonne, pendant son noviciat chez les Oratoriens, et particulièrement du choc provoqué par la lecture de Spinoza. Il voulut, à la fin de sa vie, questionner une fois de plus celui qui figurait à ses yeux " l'étranger" par excellence. C'est en reprenant son vieil exemplaire de L'Ethique - commenté par Charles Appuhn, dans " Les Classiques (...) Garnier ", et surchargé de ses propres notes - qu'il écrivit cet essai. La première version devait figurer dans Le Christ étonné et faire pendant à son étude sur saint Augustin, mais devant l'ampleur qu'elle prenait il y renonça. Nous avons en général suivi la seconde version en conservant les éclats de la première. (shrink)

Cet article souhaite montrer que les modèles spatiaux, physiques ou expérientiels, proposés généralement pour rendre compte du fonctionnement des particules verbales en anglais, posent de nombreux problèmes. En particulier, il s’avère impossible de réduire le signifié de UP à l’expression d’un « mouvement vertical vers le haut » et les valeurs non spatiales sont très nombreuses. L’alternative décrite ici, dans le cadre général de la Théorie de la Relation Interlocutive, consiste à rechercher dans le fonctionnement même du système linguistique les (...) causes et les motifs à la fois de la structuration spatiale et non spatiale. Cette recherche s’appuie sur une définition systémique du langage fondée sur l’auto-référence et l’auto-organisation, plutôt que sur des stimuli environnementaux qui seraient plus ou moins « évidents ». The article suggests an ethical-anthropological reading of Thoughts, magna opera of the French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal, which was published after his death by his relatives and friends. Such a reading is presented in three moments: Firstly, an anthropological description aimed at answering the question ‘who is man?’; secondly, an analysis of Pascal’s erotic condition; and, finally, an ethical proposal as cura amoris. The main argument of the article is that every human being has a motivation in acting, that (...) of love and being loved. Thus, having a happy or unhappy life depends on the care for this erotic condition, and the latter is achieved through thought. (shrink)

This article examines two interrelated aspects of Mexican regional music response to the coronavirus crisis in the música huasteca community: the growth of interactive huapango livestreams as a preexisting but newly significant space for informal community gathering and cultural participation at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, and the composition of original verses by son huasteco performers addressing the pandemic. Both the livestreams and the newly created coronavirus disease verses reflect critical improvisatory approaches to the pandemic in música huasteca. The (...) interactive livestreams signaled an ad hoc community infrastructure facilitated by social media and an emerging community space fostered by Do-It-Yourself activists. Improvised COVID-related verses presented resonant local and regional themes as a community response to a global crisis. Digital ethnography conducted since March 2020 revealed a regional burst of musical creativity coupled with DIY intentionality, a leveling of access to virtual community spaces, and enhanced digital intimacies established across a wide cultural diaspora in Mexico and the USA. These responses were musically, poetically, and organizationally improvisational, as was the overall outpouring of the son huasteco music inspired by the coronavirus outbreak. Son huasteco is a folk music tradition from the Huasteca, a geo-cultural region spanning the intersection of six states in central Mexico. This study examines a selection of musical responses by discussing improvisational examples in both Spanish and the indigenous language Nahuatl, and in the virtual musical communities of the Huasteca migrant diaspora in digital events such as “Encuentro Virtual de Tríos Huastecos,” the “Huapangos Sin Fronteras” festival and competition, and in the nightly gatherings on social media platforms developed during the pandemic to sustain the Huastecan cultural expression. These phenomena have served as vibrant points of transnational connection and identity in a time where physical gatherings were untenable. (shrink)

The French translation of the Nicomachean Ethics done by Oresme in the 14th century has some interesting notes explaining the Aristotelian text. In this paper we present his interpretation of passage V 7, 1134b18-1135a5 of the NE, where a distinction is made between natural and conventional justice. Even though Oresme is influenced by Aquinas, his commentary shows great independence of thought and is a very interesting example of the transition from the medieval to the modern world.

The paper analyzes some of the problems involved in defining speech, with the aim of showing the epistemic choices involved in its implementation as a methodology or analysis technique. The difficulty of the concept of discourse is its bordering nature of language structures and contextual domains that shape utterances, which has led to different approaches: the contextualized utterances, institutions governing language formation of statements or sociohistorical systems that explain its regularity. Such uncertainty increases when registering the models on the set (...) of concomitant concepts, from which derive various extensions of the discursive, basically the discourse as inner domain of ideology, and in which connection the subject form, or as a representation of social concepts in serving an ideological domain and a cognitive domain of prediscursive character. El trabajo analiza algunos de los problemas implicados en la definición de discurso, con el objetivo de mostrar las opciones epistémicas implicadas en su aplicación como metodología o técnica de análisis. La dificultad del concepto de discurso radica en su carácter de frontera entre las estructuras de lenguaje y los dominios contextuales que dan forma a los enunciados, lo que ha derivado en enfoques cuyo objeto es distinto: los enunciados contextualizados, las instituciones de lenguaje que regulan la formación de los enunciados o los sistemas sociohistóricos que explican su regularidad. Tal indeterminación aumenta al inscribir los modelos en el conjunto de conceptos concomitantes al discurso, de donde derivan distintas extensiones de lo discursivo, básicamente, el discurso como dominio interior a la ideología, y en cuya conexión se forma el sujeto, o en cuanto representación de lo social en que actúa un dominio ideológico y un dominio cognitivo, de carácter prediscursivo. En correspondencia con las interpretaciones modales de la mecánica cuántica, Lombardi y Castagnino (2008) y da Costa, Lombardi y Lastiri (2013) han propuesto para dicha teoría una ontología de haces de propiedades posibles intrínsecas, centrada principalmente en las cuestiones de la contextualidad e indistinguibilidad cuánticas. En correspondencia con la interpretación conocida como “mecánica cuántica relacional” (Rovelli, 1996), se han propuesto dos ontologías basadas en relaciones. Laura Candiotto (2017) aboga por una metafísica de relaciones radical, considerada por la autora como una (...) instancia del llamado “realismo estructural óntico”. Alternativamente, Andrea Oldofredi (2021) propone una ontología de haces de relaciones, considerada por el autor como una instancia del llamado “realismo estructural moderado”. Desde la década de 1980, el tema del entrelazamiento cuántico ha llevado a varios autores (Teller, Healey, Howard, Esfeld) a defender que la mecánica cuántica comporta una forma de holismo. Se ha defendido que el holismo de la mecánica cuántica da apoyo a la tesis metafísica conocida como “monismo de prioridad” (Schaffer, 2010a). En este artículo, se propone una ontología de la mecánica cuántica en la que las propiedades de los sistemas cuánticos revisten a la vez carácter modal y relacional. Como resultado, se obtiene una ontología de la mecánica cuántica holista que resulta una instancia del monismo de prioridad y del realismo estructural moderado. (shrink)

Resumen Este trabajo revisa algunas de las objeciones más frecuentes contra la versión que Nozick ofrece de la estipulación lockeana. Se detiene especialmente en dos de ellas: aquella que afirma que la estipulación es contraproducente y aquella que, por el contrario, sostiene que es insuficiente. Se rechazarán ambas críticas. La primera porque pasa por alto la distinción que Nozick hace entre no disminuir las oportunidades de usar un bien y las oportunidades de apropiárselo; la segunda porque asume erróneamente que la (...) línea de base de la estipulación se encuentra siempre en el estado de naturaleza. Finalmente se ofrece una formulación del principio de justicia en la adquisición que recoge las restricciones de estipulación.This paper reviews some of the most frequent objections against Nozick's version of Lockean Proviso. In particular, it examines two of them: the one that affirms that the stipulation is self-defeating and the one that, on the contrary, maintains that it is insufficient or to weak. Both criticisms are rejected. The first because it ignores Nozick's distinction between not diminishing the opportunities to use a specific good and the opportunities to appropriate it; the second because it erroneously assumes that the baseline of the stipulation is always in the state of nature. Finally, a formulation is offered on the principle of justice in acquisition that includes the stipulation restrictions. (shrink)

Resumo : O objetivo deste artigo será o de tentar verificar qual a relação de Willard Van Orman Quine com a teoria deflacionária da verdade. Para tanto, começaremos com o exame dos portadores de verdade, com a intenção de saber a opinião de Quine sobre qual, dentre outros, seria o verdadeiro portador ou veículo da verdade, ou seja, saber, segundo Quine, de que dizemos ser verdadeiro ou falso. Reduziremos nosso exame às sentenças e proposições, e uma vez identificado o portador (...) de verdade escolhido por nosso filósofo aqui em questão, a saber, a sentença , faremos uma breve apresentação das terias “deflacionárias” e “da correspondência” no que diz respeito à verdade. Por fim, com base em tal apresentação, trataremos de identificar a posição quiniana no que se refere à verdade e, consequentemente, sua relação com o deflacionismo. (shrink)

Este artigo tenta localizar alguns pontos nos quais pode se embasar a crítica de Espinosa à filosofia política utópica, esta muitas vezes baseada em uma noção transcendente de poder. Fazemos isso dando relevo a algumas noções, como a de experiência e a de indivíduo, além de focalizarmos a importância da noção de conatus no estabelecimento de uma ontologia da atualidade da natureza humana, na qual, do ponto de vista cognitivo, conhecimento imaginativo e racional afirmam ambos a atualidade dessa natureza humana (...) e permitem a proposição de regimes políticos baseados em tal atualidade. This paper will introduce and explore a set of quantified counterfactual temporal alethic-deontic systems, that is, systems that combine counterfactual temporal alethic-deontic logic with predicate logic. I will consider three types of systems: constant, variable and constant and variable domain systems. Every system can be combined with either necessary or contingent identity. All logics are described both semantically and proof theoretically. I use a kind of possible world semantics, inspired by the so-called T x W semantics, to characterise them semantically (...) and semantic tableaux to characterise them proof theoretically. Our models contain several different accessibility relations and a similarity relation between possible worlds, which are used in the definitions of the truth conditions for the various operators. Soundness results are obtained for every tableau system and completeness results for a subclass of these. (shrink)

Die Frage ›Warum ist überhaupt etwas und nicht vielmehr nichts?‹ gehört zu den ebenso traditionsreichen wie umstrittenen Problemen der Philosophie. Bereits mehrmals in die Mottenkiste der Philosophiegeschichte verbannt, erlebt sie doch zuverlässig ihre Renaissancen. Der vorliegende Band nimmt sich der ›Grundfrage‹ in einer ideengeschichtlichen Perspektive an. Dabei stellt sich heraus, dass die systematisch keineswegs erst mit Leibniz auftauchende Frage in ihrer Geschichte von der Antike bis zur gegenwärtigen analytischen Philosophie nicht nur jeweils unterschiedliche Antworten provoziert hat, sondern vor allem auch (...) ganz verschieden gestellt worden ist: Formuliert Leibniz »Pourquoi il y a plus tôt quelque chose que rien?«, heißt es bei Schelling »Warum ist nicht nichts, warum ist überhaupt etwas?«, während Schopenhauer ihr eine existentielle Wendung gibt (»Lieber nichts als etwas«). Heideggers Auseinandersetzung mit dem Nihilismus führt zu der Frage: »Warum ist überhaupt Seiendes und nicht vielmehr Nichts?«, während Arendt sie ins Politische wendet (»Warum ist überhaupt jemand und nicht niemand?«). Der Band wird durch einen Überblick über die vielschichtige Diskussion der ›letzten Warum-Frage‹ in der Tradition der Analytischen Philosophie sowie einen Antwortversuch aus Sicht der aktuellen Physik und Kosmologie abgerundet. Thomas Reid’s influence on continental and especially on French philosophy at the beginning of the 19th century has to be considered against the background of the crisis of the philosophical project of the moderns. This project, which is intimately related to the rise of the modern scientific world image, has one of its major tenets in the so called “theory of ideas” introduced by Descartes and developed further by Locke. By emphasizing the role of our active faculties in the formulation (...) of judgements, Reid rejects this theory. One of the consequences of this rejection is the distinction Reid makes between sensations, which are passive, and perceptions, which are active. Maine de Biran picks up Reid’s emphasis on our active powers but reinterprets it on the light of his theory of the “primitive fact” that external objects resist our efforts to move them, thus providing a unifying principle for Reid’s “principles of common sense”. La queja contra el exceso es tan antigua como la misma cultura. pero el saber no se rige únicamente por una ley de acumulación cuantitativa ; saber significa también reducir. Una teoría hermenéutica del conocimiento escapa mejor a las aporias del exceso que una descripción positivista de la realidad. Desde esta economía de la significación cabe defender la interdisciplinariedad de los saberes como un ahorro y no como una suerte de complicación de las perspectivas sobre la realidad.

Dans la section 1, j’explique pourquoi une conception Dummet-tienne du réalisme n’a de pertinence que dans certains cas particuliers. Dans la section 2, j’indique qu’il est raisonnable de penser que Crispin Wright soutient que la vérité de certains jugements dépend de notre capacité de la connaître (si et) seulement si leur vérité consiste dans le fait qu’ils sont superassertables. Dans la section 3, je souligne qu’insister, avec Dummett et Wright, sur la connaissabilité, nous empêche de voir qu’il y a d’autres (...) formes légitimes de réalisme. Je propose une réfutation de la thèse attribuée à Wright dans la section 2, ce qui m’amène à suggérer que c’est une erreur de penser que la question du réalisme concerne essentiellement la nature de la vérité. Com o escopo de revisitar a relação entre biopolítica e direitos humanos, as linhas que se seguem se dedicam ao diálogo que Giorgio Agamben estabelece com Hannah Arendt. The origens of totalitarianism e The human condition, publicados respectivamente em 1951 e 1958, e Homo sacer: il potere sovrano e la nuda vita e Mezzi senza fine: note sulla politica, publicados em 1995 e 1996, serão as referências mais proeminentes. O diálogo será, todavia, orientado pelo cortejo da ajuda humanitária. Devemos levar (...) a sério as hipóteses do filósofo italiano a esse respeito. Por um lado, o humanitário surge no nosso século purificado de todo comprometimento político, contribuindo para consolidar a compreensão da vida como mera vida, vida biológica, simples fato de ser vivente. Por outro lado, aferrando-se contraditoriamente na visão da “vida nua” como aquela desprovida de direitos, podemos observar que a ajuda humanitária substitui o reconhecimento, a atribuição e a garantia de direitos. A distribuição de cestas básicas e remédios adia sempre mais o gesto de reconhecimento da igualdade, a justa atribuição de direitos e a garantia de oportunidades para o exercício de direitos, levando-nos ao ponto de não mais evitar as suspeitas deque uma secreta solidariedade,celebrada entre os organismos internacionais de ajuda humanitária e as forças que deveriam combater, embala os sonhos contemporâneos.
